The Netherlands attracts many international workers. The main work route is the highly skilled migrant permit, and graduates can use the orientation year.
Orientation year in short
- Open to graduates of Dutch universities and of foreign universities that rank in the top 200 on at least two of three named rankings.
- Apply within three years of graduating.
- One year, once in a lifetime, with free access to the labour market.
- Fee about €200 and processing about two to four weeks, as described in a guide dated 8 December 2025.
Former orientation year holders can later switch to the highly skilled migrant permit with a lower salary threshold, for up to three years after the year ends. The guide reported about €2,801 gross per month for the 2024 rate, so check the current IND figure. Source: Feather Insurance.
Other tips
- Your employer must be a recognised sponsor with IND.
- Get your diploma evaluated if IND asks.
Red flags and scams
- Anyone who asks you to pay for a job offer, a permit or a “guaranteed” visa.
- Adverts with very high pay for beginners, or with no interview.
- Contact only by WhatsApp, Telegram or a free email address, with no company website or address.
- Look-alike government sites. Use only the official government website for the country.
If you think you have been targeted, stop paying, keep every message and receipt, and report it to the Dutch police. You can also email us at admin@jobsbroads.com.
