Becoming a Doctor in Germany with a Foreign Degree: The Approbation Process

Last reviewed: 25 October 2026. Based on a guide at approbatio.de. Rules vary by German state.

Foreign doctors need a licence called Approbation to practise in Germany. The path is long but clear.

Steps

  1. German B2 and a C1 medical language certificate through the Fachsprachpruefung.
  2. Choose a federal state and prepare certified, translated documents.
  3. Submit the application to the state authority.
  4. Equivalence review. For many non EU graduates, differences are found and a knowledge exam (Kenntnispruefung) is required.
  5. Receive the Approbation.

Non EU doctors can apply for a temporary work permit (Berufserlaubnis) after passing the language exam, valid for two years according to the guide. The process usually takes one to two years. Source: approbatio.de. Costs were not covered by that source, so ask your state authority.

Pay

We did not find a verified national salary figure to publish. Hospital pay is set by collective agreements. Ask employers directly.

Red flags and scams

  • Anyone who asks you to pay for a job offer, a permit or a “guaranteed” visa.
  • Adverts with very high pay for beginners, or with no interview.
  • Contact only by WhatsApp, Telegram or a free email address, with no company website or address.
  • Look-alike government sites. Use only the official government website for the country.

If you think you have been targeted, stop paying, keep every message and receipt, and report it to the German police. You can also email us at admin@jobsbroads.com.
