Last reviewed: 25 October 2026. US immigration rules change often. Check USCIS and the State Department Visa Bulletin before you file.
A green card gives permanent residence in the United States. There are only a few lawful routes. This guide compares them so you can see which ones are realistic for you.
The main routes
| Route | Typical person | Main limit |
|---|---|---|
| Family | Close relative of a US citizen or green card holder | Wait times depend on the relationship and country |
| Employment (EB categories) | Worker with an employer or exceptional ability | Employer steps and annual caps |
| Diversity Visa lottery | Natives of eligible countries | Selection is random and entry is free |
| Refugee or asylum | People fleeing persecution | Strict legal tests |
| Investment (EB-5) | Investor creating US jobs | Large required investment |
Why waiting times differ
For many categories you get a priority date, and you can only move forward when that date becomes current in the monthly Visa Bulletin. Wait times are different for each country and category.
What to avoid
- Anyone selling a guaranteed green card.
- Notaries or consultants who are not licensed to give legal advice.
- Websites that look like USCIS but ask for money to enter the lottery.
Red flags and scams
- Anyone who asks you to pay for a job offer, a permit or a “guaranteed” visa.
- Adverts with very high pay for beginners, or with no interview.
- Contact only by WhatsApp, Telegram or a free email address, with no company website or address.
- Look-alike government sites. Use only the official government website for the country.
If you think you have been targeted, stop paying, keep every message and receipt, and report it to the Federal Trade Commission at reportfraud.ftc.gov. You can also email us at admin@jobsbroads.com.
