Finding a home is one of the first problems for newcomers. This page lists the checks that protect you, whatever the price.
Before you pay
- View the home in person or by trusted video.
- Never send money to someone you have not met for a home you have not seen.
- Check that a deposit is protected in a government approved scheme where this applies.
- Ask for a written tenancy agreement and read it.
Your landlord or agent may check your right to rent in England. Find the official rules on GOV.UK. Renting rules are changing in England under the Renters Rights Act, so confirm the current position on GOV.UK.
Help with costs
- Local councils can explain housing support.
- Citizens Advice offers free guidance.
Red flags and scams
- Anyone who asks you to pay for a job offer, a permit or a “guaranteed” visa.
- Adverts with very high pay for beginners, or with no interview.
- Contact only by WhatsApp, Telegram or a free email address, with no company website or address.
- Look-alike government sites. Use only the official government website for the country.
